What happens when you die?

What happens when we die? It’s the penultimate question.

No one knows for sure, and perhaps we never will. Not of course until the day we reach those pearly gates ourselves.

So I’m unable to offer any answers conclusively, but I will share my perspective after years of research and first hand contact with countless individuals who claim to have died medically, only to return with an important message to share with the world. With 1000’s of stories published on Near Death Experiences (NDEs) and millions more that never made it into print, it’s hard to ignore the facts. Especially as they generally share common components including:

  • the absence of fear and feelings of profound peace
  • a journey outside the physical body
  • travelling up a tunnel towards a bright light
  • encounters with dead relatives or divine beings
  • the feeling of moving beyond the boundaries of time and space
  • a conviction of having a new understanding of the nature of the universe

So what exactly is a near-death experience? Dr Penny Sartori explains it to be at its simplest, ‘a clear and memorable vision that occurs when people are close to death — though only a small percentage of us will have one.’

What’s it like to Die?

In under four minutes, this touching short video shares accounts of those having experienced NDE’s which helps us understand what its like to die. Hearing these accounts always brings me a sense of comfort and peace so I hope it will you too.

The shared experience of all NDE encounters, recall a profound, all-encompassing love and universal compassion for everything.

This experience of deep love is what I believe to be the essence of who we truly are on the deepest level. At the level of the soul, which is all expansive, eternal and divine in origin. It’s these universal truths of love and compassion that underpin the core teachings of all religious and spiritual texts. I believe we are spiritual beings temporarily inhabiting a physical body, so when we die, we simply reconnect with this expansive, eternal and all-knowing spiritual aspect of ourselves.

The feelings of expansion and being a part of everything attest to what Quantum Physics are now telling us about the interconnectivity of all life. We literally become one with all life, because at a quantum level we are one, ie. we are all inseparable from an ever-present quantum energy field and this is the core realm of all existence.

The Skeptics experience of NDE

Skeptics have long dismissed these “life-after-life” experiences as fantasies produced by the brain under stress. Neurosurgeon Dr. Eben Alexander was one of those hard core skeptics who worshiped the conventional scientific viewpoint of Reductive Materialism. That is, until he had his own near-death experience in 2009, which blew the lid off his scepticism and opened him up to an entirely new perspective on reality.

I now know that conventional science (Reductive Materialism) that I once worshiped…is kindergarden level. It’s woefully inadequate to explain our own consciousness. ~ Dr. Eben Alexander

In this fascinating video below, Dr. Alexander recounts his transcendental near death experience in the midst of severe bacterial meningitis. He recalls his arduous trek toward understanding its profound lessons through a complete revision of everything he had come to believe about science, consciousness, spirituality, and the very nature of all existence. His full story is outlined in his book ‘PROOF OF HEAVEN.’

Dr. Alexander explains that he was shocked to find the hyper-reality of that spiritual realm, of which he described as:

…this (heavenly) realm is absolutely real. It’s so non-earth like. It’s completely outside of our concept of space and time; it’s a much richer, more vibrant, more crisp and fully existent world than this little illusory, dream-like material realm we live in.

With his new found awareness, Dr. Alexander is now dedicating his life to spreading his knowledge to the scientific community, which he believes is still relatively primitive in it’s current understanding of consciousness. He believes that progression will be made when science and spirituality begin to thrive in symbiosis. This will then offer the most profound insight into fundamental Truth, yielding unimaginable power.

He suggests that by probing deeply into our own consciousness, we transcend the limitations of the human brain, and of the physical-material realm.

NDE’s; an insight to Quantum Physics

quantumI recall a particularly extraordinary NDE account from the book ‘The Wisdom Of Near-Death Experiences’ by intensive care nurse Dr. Penny Sartori. Having seen 1000’s of patients die, Dr.Sartori reveals dramatic evidence in her book that she says should banish anyones fear of dying. Her recollection of the case of a Moroccan woman in her late 30s, is most striking of all.

‘In November 2009, Rajaa Benamour had an anaesthetic injection for minor surgery, after which she found herself mentally scrolling through her entire life, right back to her birth. This was followed by what she could only describe as a rapid review of the creation of the universe. After being discharged from hospital, she started trying to find books about what she’d learned during her vision.

Eventually, she realised that she had somehow acquired an in-depth understanding of quantum physics — despite never having previously known anything about the subject.

This motivated her to study the subject at university level and to gain a Phd in the subject. The professor in charge of her studies was astounded. The knowledge she’d already acquired, he said, could not have come either from studying student textbooks or taking a quick course.

Stranger still, he was puzzled by some of her scientific theories — yet they’ve since been confirmed by papers published in physics journals.’ Did Rajaa have access to a deeper level of reality, a reality that underpins all of existence which mystics have spoken about for eons to which science is yet to discover?

Can all these tens of thousand’s of people really be delusional? Or could there be far more to approaching death than scientists have acknowledged? Maybe they are looking in the wrong place for the answers? Science is still a long way off from discovering the fundamental truths of our existence, and of the nature of consciousness. But I have every faith that it will eventually evolve to explain the concepts which ancient mystics have known since the dawn of civilization. Regardless of scientific validation, I hope hearing these accounts will bring you a sesne of comfort and peace, and help those who fear death to view it as a peaceful experience.

    1. Yes the unknown sure encourages us to explore, expand and develop faith. Perhaps the only truth is what lies within us and by learning to access and discern our inner wisdom, will we ever know whats real. Also truth is subjective so whats true for me is not necessary true for you, but thats what makes life so beautiful – each of us experiencing and interpreting life’s mysteries in our own unique ways. x

  1. I enjoyed the piece. There is technology to know. Gregor Mendel the father of genetics, was a monk doing what was thought of as “Natural Theology” . He thought of his work as seeking the truth of god in his creation. Quantum theory has put the spiritual back into science. By definition once one moves beyond matter the realm of energy or spirit is what exists. Most science as its practiced today is a cult of fundamentalist for materialism.

    1. Thanks for your insightful comments. I will look him up! and yes the wonderful work of Quantum Physics is making groundbreaking progress into discovering the nature of consciousness and of our existence beyond matter as beings of energy. However like you say, mainstream materialist science, is way behind the times in it’s understanding of such principles. Some may say stubborn or fearful of what they may find? I truly believe that the more quantum theory advances, the sooner they will have to adapt their definition of reality.

  2. I don’t put much merit to others concepts of what happens after death. It is also a subject that most people fear the most inquiring about. As i philosopher, I find it to be the least of the subjects to worry about in life, since it can be whatever you want to imagine it to me. Even those who state they have had after death experiences could have merely been experiencing their imagination on overload, so again I don’t give much merit to their statements.

I have always stated that I will know what happens after death when I get there. Right now I will focus on life.

But we all like to form some sort of concept about death, so I have chosen that of Krishna Consciousness. The concept that we are not the body, we are the soul. The soul is the size of an atom, yet has the power to give the body energy and even consciousness. When the body dies, the tiny little soul simply goes to another body and starts a new life with a clean slate.

We could go into the details of the purpose of Krishna Consciousness but it really doesn’t matter. I have merely taken a concept of the the whole and incorporated it into my own consciousness so as to answer an unanswerable questions while we are imprisoned within the realm of space and time, so I can think about life and not death.

Like I said before, when I die I will know what happens after death.
